How to Calculate EPF Interest on Your PF Balance 2026: Simple Step-by-Step Guide with Examples

Understanding EPF Interest: Why It Matters

The interest credited to your EPF account is one of the most powerful components of your retirement savings. At the current rate of 8.25% per annum (FY 2025-26), compounded annually, your PF corpus grows significantly faster than a bank savings account (2.5-4%) or a fixed deposit (6-7.5%). Over a 30-year career, this compounding effect can turn a modest monthly contribution into a substantial retirement corpus. However, many employees do not understand how the interest is calculated — leading to confusion when the annual interest credit (typically appearing in September-October) does not match their expectations.

The EPFO uses the monthly running balance method to calculate interest. Despite the interest rate being declared annually, the calculation is done on a monthly basis, with the total interest for the year being the sum of monthly calculations. This guide explains the method step by step with real examples. Use our EPF Calculator to automatically compute your interest and projected retirement corpus.

The Monthly Running Balance Method Explained

The EPF interest calculation follows these principles:

  1. The EPFO declares the interest rate for each financial year (e.g., 8.25% for FY 2025-26). This rate applies to the entire year's balance.
  2. The balance at the beginning of the year (1st April) is taken as the opening balance. For each month, the month-end balance is calculated by adding the monthly contributions (both employee and employer EPF shares) to the opening balance.
  3. Interest is calculated on the balance at the beginning of each month (i.e., the closing balance of the previous month). However, the EPFO provides a concession: contributions made during a month earn interest from the beginning of that month. This is the "running balance" benefit — contributions made in any part of the month are treated as if they were made on the 1st of that month.
  4. The monthly interest rate is the annual rate divided by 12. So for 8.25% per annum, the monthly rate is 8.25% ÷ 12 = 0.6875%.
  5. Interest for a month = (Opening balance for the month × Monthly rate) / 100. The total annual interest is the sum of interest for all 12 months.

Step-by-Step Example: ₹5 Lakh Opening Balance

Let us calculate the EPF interest for an employee with an opening balance of ₹5,00,000 on 1st April 2026, monthly contribution of ₹5,000 (employee share), and EPF interest rate of 8.25% per annum.

MonthOpening Balance (₹)Contribution (₹)Closing Balance (₹)Interest (₹) (0.6875%/month)

May5,05,0005,0005,10,0003,472
Jun5,10,0005,0005,15,0003,506
Jul5,15,0005,0005,20,0003,541
Aug5,20,0005,0005,25,0003,575
Sep5,25,0005,0005,30,0003,609
Oct5,30,0005,0005,35,0003,644
Nov5,35,0005,0005,40,0003,678
Dec5,40,0005,0005,45,0003,713
Jan5,45,0005,0005,50,0003,747
Feb5,50,0005,0005,55,0003,781
Mar5,55,0005,0005,60,0003,816
Total Interest₹43,516

The total interest of ₹43,516 is credited to the EPF account as a single line item in the passbook, typically appearing in September-October of the next financial year. The closing balance for the year is ₹5,60,000 + ₹43,516 = ₹6,03,516.

How to Verify Your EPF Interest Credit

When the annual interest is credited, follow these steps to verify it matches the declared rate: log into the UAN portal and download your passbook for the financial year, identify the interest credit entry (appears as a single line item separate from monthly contributions, typically labelled "Interest" or "Int." in the month-end column), note the balance at the beginning of the year (April 1), compute the expected interest using our EPF Calculator (which applies the correct rate automatically), and compare the expected interest with the actual interest credited. If there is a significant discrepancy (more than ₹100-₹200), your employer may have filed ECRs inconsistently, or the interest computation may have errors. For passbook verification, see our EPF Passbook Analysis Guide.

Important Points About EPF Interest

  • Interest is tax-free: EPF interest is exempt from income tax under Section 10(12) if the employee has maintained continuous service of 5+ years or the balance is not withdrawn before 5 years. Interest on contributions exceeding ₹2.5 lakh per year (high contribution threshold) is taxable in the hands of the employee for contributions made from FY 2021-22 onwards — only applicable to employees whose annual PF contribution (employee share) exceeds ₹2.5 lakh.
  • EPS portion does NOT earn interest: The EPS (pension) contribution (8.33% of basic) goes to the pension pool and does not earn annual interest. It qualifies you for a monthly pension after age 58 (with 10+ years of service).
  • Withdrawal impacts interest: If you withdraw from PF mid-year, the withdrawn amount stops earning interest from the month of withdrawal. Partial withdrawals reduce the running balance for subsequent months.
